Join teachers and education workers on Monday, October 15 for a strong show of solidarity with students and their families.
We demand a $15 minimum wage and fair labour laws.
We will distribute flyers and gather signatures for the $15 and Fairness petition. Teachers and education workers at nearby John Polanyi Collegiate will be joining after work. All teachers and education workers are welcome to join!
Doug Ford’s government has confirmed its plan to deny workers the minimum wage hike scheduled for January 1st 2019. Let’s stand with our students and their families to make clear that Toronto teachers and education workers support a $15 minimum wage and fair labour laws.
As educators, we see the impacts of low-wage and precarious work on our students and their families:
- Students arrive exhausted for class because they care for siblings and take on domestic work to support parents working multiple low-wage jobs.
- Students’ learning is interrupted when they are forced to move schools because their families face eviction in an increasingly inaccessible housing market.
- Students struggle with social isolation and lack self-confidence as a result of the stigma associated with poverty.
While we work every day in our classrooms to mitigate the achievement gap faced by low-income and racialized students, we know that schools alone cannot resolve the issue. Raising the minimum wage is an essential step in ensuring that all students have access to meaningful learning opportunities.
Take urgent action for $15 and decent work laws!
The $15 minimum wage and decent work legislation, such as paid sick days, equal pay rules and laws to make it easier to join a union, are all up for grabs. The minimum wage increase is currently scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2019. Now more than ever, we need to continue to campaign to keep it from the hands of the big business lobby.
Join us on October 15 for our province-wide day of action by signing up below and tell Doug Ford: Hands Off Workers’ Rights!
EMERGENCY RESPONSE: When legislation is tabled, take the same plan you have made for October 15, and do it the day AFTER the legislation is tabled. Keep it simple.
